That data has now come through, and we’re pretty excited by what we’re seeing!
Why is the data from the United States?
The genomic reference population most closely related to the NuEra genetics is in the United States.
Using this U.S. reference population provides a more accurate assessment of the bulls' genetic merit than an Australian genomic evaluation based on a less closely related reference population.
What is the US Beef Index?
The US Beef Index is an economic selection index developed by ABS through its Pasture to Plate Genetic Evaluation.
It looks at a range of traits that influence the profitability of producing beef, including:

Yearling weight

Dry matter intake
-
Residual average daily gain
-
Carcase weight
-
Marbling
-
Ribeye area
-
Fat
-
Pulmonary arterial pressure
These traits are combined into one overall index designed to help identify cattle with the genetic potential to contribute to profitability in a commercial beef operation.
The 60 Angus bulls in our sale are evaluated using Australian Angus BREEDPLAN EBVs and indexes, while the 12 NuEra bulls are evaluated through the ABS Pasture to Plate system.
The dollar values from the two systems are not directly comparable. However, the concept is similar to the economic indexes Australian producers are familiar with, such as $A, using genetic information to help identify cattle with the potential to contribute to commercial profitability.

The remaining bull, Lot 31, ranks in the top 2%.
US Beef Index values for the 12 NuEra bulls range from approximately $250 to $333.
We knew the NuEra bulls had strong data, but seeing these results come through in the latest genomic evaluation is pretty exciting.
